Attention Music Students... Your Old Times Are Going Away!
Posted by Jamin Rathbun on 06/29/09.
Confirm Music Lessons Before They Go Away!
All current music students must confirm their intent to keep their current lessons days and times before Sunday, July 19th! On that date, I'll purge the schedule and start booking new students in those spots.

To hold those spots, you just need to mail or drop off your registration form, along with the $40 registration fee. Tuition isn't due until the first week of classes. If you're looking to make a move, or if you are a new student looking for the ideal spot... July 20th would be the best day to have your pick of the litter. = ) Note that the new registration forms have a box to indicate your preferred lessons times when you submit your registration forms. If you include that information, I'll follow up after July 19th's purge date to get those confirmed.

By the way... I fill all of our class and lessons spots on a first-come first-served basis. It is always a good idea to get your registration in early, especially for those smaller Pre Ballet and Ballet Basics classes and private lessons.

In fact, they'll be coming to us, fresh off a two-week theatre camp at our own Northeast State.

The same group will be performing an adaptation of John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" at 7:30 on Thursday, July 23rd. Tickets for this show are just $5. The doors open at 7:00. Shoot me an email to RSVP.

Summer Break Begins In Just Four Weeks!

Gensis .
The school year wraps up on June 27th with our end-of-year Music Recital and Parent's Watch Week. PLEASE let us know if you have vacation plans that will interfere with this month's schedule. It really helps with our planning for the month.

There are a few key things to note about the month of June.

First... Parent's Watch week will take place the last week of June, and provides a time when parents, grandparents, and friends can come and watch that week's ballet class. It's a great chance to see what the kids have learned this year.

All of our music teachers have set aside times on either June 13th or June 20th to provide make up lessons for those who have missed one this semester. If you've missed a lesson, and would like to have the teacher make it up on one of those days... Please let me know.

Our Princess Ballerina and Artists In Armor summer camps have the potential to interfere with the morning classes for the last two weeks of June. If you would prefer to participate in one of the camps, we'll apply a $10 credit (for that week's classes) toward your camp tuition. Just include a quick note on your registration form letting me know that is your preference.

One final note: Please get tuition payments in early this month, as we don't have as much flexibility with payroll and expenses at the end of the year. Thanks!

Music Recitals For This Semester -- June 26th & 27th!

Music Recitals For This Semester -- June 26th and 27th!
Music Recitals, for participating music students, are coming up on the weekend of June 27th. I'll send additional details as soon as the instructor schedules have been finalized.

For those who are new to the Arts Center, we schedule recitals toward the end of each semester, to give our music students a chance to show the results of their hard work and -- to motivate them to work hard, and continue to practice, down the stretch. = ) Recitals are scheduled with around twenty student at a time, meaning that each recital lasts an hour or less -- brief enough that you can bring the little ones without having to worry (too much) about them getting restless. = )

Participation isn't mandatory, but is encouraged for all students. As a student, it's much easier to stay motivated if you have the accountability of a recital coming up. = ) If you're not sure if you're student is participating... Talk to your instructor this week. Thanks!

Registration Forms for the 2009-2010 School Year are Available!
Posted by Jamin Rathbun on 05/20/09.
The 2009-2010 registration is available online.
We've added several new dance classes (Modern, Jazz, and Classical Variations), private music instruction (cello and clarinet) and -- multiple enrollment and child discounts for the 2009-2010 school year, up to 35%!

You can register for classes anytime, although it's probably easiest to do that in person since some of the new discounts are hard to communicate on the form, especially if you are enrolling multiple students. By the way... You'll need to fill out a form for each student now, rather than have them all on one sheet.

Where are the art and theatre classes? We're going to be offering lots of them, in the form of 1-6 week workshops throughout the year. They aren't on the schedule yet but -- we'll post info about those as soon as we can. = )

Other than the changes noted above, the schedule, and the process, is about the same as last year. Download the form here and, of course, let me know if you have questions.

We have a incredible group of parents, students, and patrons who would be the envy of almost any company. = ) Would your company benefit from the visibility of being connected with our production? Please let me know.

One more thing... Tickets for Genesis will be available on Tuesday, May 12th. Please Note: We'll have assigned seating this year so -- get your tickets early to ensure seats up front! If you order online, I'll automatically set aside the best seats available. Don't forget! Each student receives two tickets for the production, which must be claimed so that seats can be assigned.

Auditions, Music Fundamentals Class, & Answers...

Auditions, Music Fundamentals Class, & Answers...
Attention singers and actors! Providence Academy is holding auditions at 4:00 this Friday, for roles in their upcoming production of the musical State Fair.

I don't have all the details yet but I do know four things: auditions will be held this Friday at 4:00; rehearsals are tentatively scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:15 to 5:15; the performances are scheduled for May 7th and 8th; and -- they have invited students of Trinity Arts Center to participate.

I'll be there on Friday to take pics of everybody and help with some of the paperwork. Contact Cindy Hornbaker, the new theatre instructor at Providence Academy, for details. Hopefully we'll see you there!

Next Monday, we begin a 16-week Music Fundamentals class targeted at 6-8 year old students. This program was developed, and will be taught, by Miss Carol Macauley, an extremely qualified and experienced instructor. (details below)

Music Fundamentals is a class designed for 6-through-8 year olds, with a maximum enrollment of eight children. Each session of this sixteen-week course will last 1.5 hours, from 5 to 6:30 on Mondays, and will begin on Feb. 9th. The class will be taught by Carol Macaulay, founder and director of the Children's Division of the Academy of Music Northwest (Seattle) from 2000 to 2007, and likewise the director of the Junior Theory and Ear Training program at the Manhattan School of Music (New York) from 1984 to 2000.

The Music Fundamentals class will use her highly successful Musical Toolbox, a series of lessons that each work from music-making first, and then progress towards developing the skills and knowledge called "music theory" and "ear training." This "ear first" approach is intended to encourage the integration of new concepts such as pitch names, rhythm durations, meters, tempos, key signatures, scales, forms, phrase structure, major/minor, etc. into an increasing body of aurally-relevant percepts.

Miss Macaulay is a fully certified Dalcroze Eurhythmics instructor, which prepares her to use the child's natural propensity for movement as a portal to musical understanding. The class is intended for young musicians who have already begun instrumental or vocal training, and who wish for increased sight-reading and sight-singing ability (the notes and the rhythms both) as well as a better understanding of the "meaning" created among the musical structures of a given piece.

If you are interested in Music Fundamentals for your student, please let me know asap. There are only eight spots available in the class. I expect it will fill quickly. The cost, including all materials and class time for the 16-week session, is $175.

One more thing... Thanks for all the great feedback last month about things that you like (and don't like) about your experience at Trinity Arts Center!

All of your feedback was helpful, and helped to highlight a few places where we have been dropping the ball a bit, or at the least, communicating poorly about it. To remedy that, we've created a a special page on the site designed to provide responses to some of your questions and feedback. If you submitted feedback about makeup lessons, recitals, productions, t-shirts, or parking (all topics that received multiple submissions), take a look. The answer might be there. = )

Also... Thanks for all of the encouragement. We were overwhelmed with, and appreciate, all of the positive comments. We also appreciate your participation at the Arts Center, and the chance to teach and encourage your kids. There's no doubt about it. We are blessed!

Thanks!

P.S. I've added a link on the web site to a public calendar for everything going on at Trinity Arts Center. You can check that out here.

Do you have something to tell us? Is there something we can do better? Have we dropped the ball in some way? Are we doing such a great job that you'd like to give us a shout out? = )

This form provides a place for you to give us completely anonymous feedback about our classes, instructors, tuition, facility, policies... Anything you'd like. What you post here is translated into an private comment that only lets us know what you think, not who you are.

We really do want to hear what you have to say. Please take a minute to let us know what we can do to serve you, your kids, your church, or your organization better.

A very special thanks to the instructors and students who participated in one of the seven music recitals this weekend!

I'm incredibly impressed with your progress, and equally impressed with the job our instructors are doing with you guys. Keep up the good work. We're lucky to have you. = ) By the way... There are a few pics posted on the Flickr site. If you have photos that you'd like to share, please send them my way.

Battle of the Bands v5 kicks off this weekend with a meet and greet scheduled from 10:00 to 11:00 on Saturday, January 24th.

Students who would like to participate should RSVP by Wednesday, letting me know what instrument they would like to play. Saturday's meet and greet will provide an opportunity for each student to play a brief "audition" piece so that the instructors can get an idea how best to form the bands and select music. We'll have guitars, amps, drums, and keyboards. You're welcome to bring anything else you might need.

Semester tuition payments are due this week. Monthly tuition payments were due last week. = )

Please get those in on time... It helps a lot.

What's coming up in 2009?
Our two-week Christmas break is over, and we are back in class on Monday, January 5th. Please note: the "semester" doesn't actually end until January 24th.

Those of you paying semester installments on tuition will have the second payment (for the last half of the year) due by January 24th. Those paying monthly tuition will continue to have payments due the first week of each month. In either case, please get those payments in on time! We DO accept credit cards, if that is an easier way to take advantage of the 8% semester discount. = )

This is a great time to get started in classes or lessons, by the way, as we begin the second half of the year. If you have questions, please let me know.

Battle of the Bands v5 begins on Saturday, January 24th with an initial meeting to assign bands and start picking music. Please RSVP by Wednesday, January 21st if you plan on participating.

For those who aren't familiar... Battle of the Bands is a six-week contest where we pair young musicians with an instructor-leader and 3 or 4 other students to learn a song from a Christian rock or contemporary artist. Each band will have six weeks to learn and rehearse their song, culminating with a "Battle of the Bands" concert, held on Saturday, February 28th. Contact Jamin for more info.

Music Students! Don't forget to confirm the time of your recital on January 17th. Most of our instructors are also setting aside time for makeup lessons this month. If we owe you one, please let us know.

There's lots more in the pipe for the second half of the year. Stay tuned for more info about that or subscribe to our RSS feed to have news delivered to you. = )

Also... Please consider donating to the Trinity Arts Foundation as part of your year-end giving.

Trinity Arts Foundation is a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization which funds scholarship and grant programs intended to increase the quality and frequency of Christian-led community arts education programs and performance opportunities in the Johnson City area.

Although we haven't promoted it widely, the Foundation has been responsible for providing around over $10,000 of scholarship monies since 2006, enabling many students to participate at the Arts Center. In addition, the Foundation underwrites a portion of the costs of our major productions each year (Annie, God With Us, The Music Man, Genesis), enabling local directors and organizations to plan and present family-friendly productions that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

Of course, we believe passionately in what we're trying to do. However, we're not providing life-saving assistance for international orphans so -- please don't take organizations like World Vision off your list in order to give to the Foundation. With that said... If you participate in or support the things we are doing, and you'd like to help us continue to do them, please consider a gift. = )

Last but not least... The Arts Center is closed on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

As noted above, the Arts Center is closed this week for fall break. We'll be back in class on Monday, October 20th.

None of our regularly scheduled lessons or classes will take place this week, including Battle of the Bands rehearsals on Saturday. The only things on the schedule are the Annie rehearsals on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Have a GREAT week off, and we'll see you next week! = )

Speaking of Annie... The first thing you should do, when we get back next week, is purchase your tickets for Annie Jr. on November 1st or 2nd (official press release below).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Trinity Arts Center is proud to announce their November production of one of America's most beloved family musicals -- Annie Jr!

Annemarie Dugan and Steve Davis direct a talented cast in retelling the story of Annie, a depression era orphan whose indisputable charm and indelibly positive outlook on life brings her out from under the evil plans of Miss Hannigan (the orphanage's mean spirited manager) into the good graces of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and her new family -- billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal assistant Grace, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Everyone is invited to attend, help us cheer for Annie, and root against the trickery of Hannigan, Rooster, and Lilly, as this delightful story unfolds. Come sing along with the wonderfully positive and memorable musical numbers in this full-length production of Annie Jr. This is absolutely a show the whole family can enjoy!

Annie Jr. will be performed three times on Saturday, November 1st (12:00, 3:00, and 6:00) and two times on Sunday, November 2nd (3:00 and 6:00) at the new state-of-the-art Gregory Performing Arts Center on the Milligan College campus. Tickets for this event are $10 each. To purchase tickets, please call the front office at 926-6048, email your ticket request to tickets@trinityartscenter.com, or stop by the Arts Center any weekday after 2:30.

Lauren Vernon will host a theatre workshop on Thursday, September 4th, from 4:00 to 6:00. Participation for current students is just $20.

Have you secretly dreamed of being the next Julia Roberts or Tom Hanks? Maybe you've admired your dramatic facial expressions in the mirror but never put them to use? The Acting Basics workshop is a fun way to explore your inner thespian and "act" a little crazy. We will spend 2 hours playing games and exploring the basic skills needed to be an actor. This will be a fun interactive workshop with theatre games, improv, performance, and other fun things to bring out your dramatic flair. Ages 10 to adult are invited to attend.

Attendees of this workshop will help us plan this year's theatre workshop and performances series. If you have an interest in theatre, and would like to have some input about what we offer... Please reserve your spot by Wednesday.

Tanya will hold special auditions for dance solos & dramatic roles for our December 13th production of God With Us.

Actors will audition on Saturday, September 6th from 9:00-10:00. Actors will be asked to complete a participation form with info about their experience and availability. They'll also be asked to read sections from a script provided by the director. Actors ages eight to adult are invited to participate.

Dance soloists will audition on Saturday, September 13th from 12:30 to 1:30. Dancers will be asked to demonstrate across the floor exercises and non-verbal acting skills. Advanced dancers only.

Central Ballet has extended a special invitation to students at Trinity Arts Center to participate in the auditions for their January production of Prince Caspian!

Auditions will be held Saturday, September 6th at the Central Ballet Studios on 120 West Summer Street in Greeneville, TN. Miss Tanya will provide transportation for any level five students who would like to participate. The majority of the rehearsals, for Trinity students, will be run in Johnson City. The final week of rehearsals (tech, dress, etc.) will be held in Greeneville.

For more information, visit centralballet.com or call Lori Ann Sparks at 620-2036. The performances are slated for January 23-25, 2009 at the Tusculum College's Annie Hogan Byrd Auditorium.

There's Still Time To Register For The 2008-2009 School Year!

Ballet, Jazz, Guitar, Piano, Voice, Drum, Bass, Violin, Art, and Language Classes in Johnson City, TN
For all of our returning students, welcome back! For those that are new this year, we're glad to have you! In either case, we've got a lot going on this year and we're excited to get started!

This year's schedule includes all of our usual dance, art, music, and language classes + the addition of monthly art, music, and theatre workshops that will give students of all ages a chance to participate without making a year-long commitment. Stay tuned for more info about those workshops... Coming soon!

Speaking of our "usual" classes...

Trinity Arts Center offers a broad range of instruction in dance, music, art, and theatre, with excellent training, small class sizes, and fun performance opportunities -- all taught by Christian instructors in a VERY family-friendly environment.

If you haven't stopped by to see us yet, we'd love to give you a tour of our studios and introduce your to our instructors. We offer FREE evaluation classes or lessons for any student interested in checking us out... A great way to gauge interest before making a commitment. Let me know if you have question about where to get plugged in. I'd be glad to help!

The photo above, by the way, includes (left to right) Miss Maggie, Miss Tanya, and Miss Beth, the early childhood dance instructors and director at Trinity Arts Center.

I'm clearly biased, but -- I am confident that you could not find a better studio environment in which to place your children for dance. For those interested, there are four things you should know about our program:
  1. Our early childhood classes are limited to twelve students. We will never "herd" your kids through an environment where they get no individual attention. We know you, we know your kids, and we'll give them great instruction in a fun setting that makes them feel special.

  2. You won't be surprised by hidden fees. You pay tuition, using whatever installment plan works for your family, and nothing else. No costume fees. No performance fees. No fund raisers. Period.

  3. Your kids are safe with us. We're located in a great part of town, with a huge lobby, comfy chairs, free internet access, and toys for younger siblings to play with while you wait. Family-friendly is an understatement. = )

  4. Everything we do is from a Christian perspective. That means our costumes are designed with modesty in mind. It also means that our choreography and music are not just age-appropriate but also God honoring, at all levels.
If you're interested in the dance program at Trinity Arts Center, please give Tanya a ring and she'll help you figure out where to get connected.

Thanks! Hopefully we'll see you in class soon!

Classes begin next Thursday, August 7th. If you haven't registered for classes yet, please do that soon!

I'll be at the Arts Center from 4:00 to 6:00 this week to help answer questions and work out class and lesson times. Openings tend to fill quickly down the stretch so, please register soon to ensure we can get you in the spots that work best for your family.

Tomorrow, Sandy, NYC, Hard Knocks Life... Annie auditions will be held on Saturday, August 9th from 2:00 to 4:00.

Our production of Annie kicks off next Saturday with open auditions for students ages six and above. This show will be performed on November 1st in Milligan College's brand new Gregory Theater. Show times and ticket prices will be announced soon.

Ann Marie (the director) passed along a few notes...

Thank you for your interest in being part of our full-length, Broadway-style musical, Annie! We are committed to making our production an artistic milestone for all participants and audiences. We are also committed to providing a wholesome, professional working atmosphere for our cast and crew. As you can imagine, an endeavor of this magnitude requires a lot of team work, focus, and commitment from everyone involved! To ensure that we reach our potential and deliver a memorable gift to the community, cast members will be asked to commit to the attached rehearsal schedule.

Roles and chorus parts are available for adults and children (ages 6 and up). The play's setting is a girl's orphanage, so we will need lots of girls!
  1. Parents (who are not auditioning for roles) are encouraged to drop their children off for the duration of the session. (Parents may help young children fill out provided form regarding experience, special skills, interests, etc., and then go)
  2. Bring a 4x6 or larger picture of yourself (all photos will be returned)
  3. Fill out provided information form on site
  4. Come prepared to sing one song (you may do selections from Annie, but it is not required). An accompanist will be provided, or selections may be sung acapella. You may be asked to sing only a few measures of your piece.
  5. Monologues are not required. We will be reading from the script and role playing various scenes.
  6. A short chorus and a few choreography steps will be taught for a group activity/audition
  7. Auditions may be video taped for director's panel review
The cast will be posted on the Trinity Arts Center website by 5:00 PM on Tuesday, August 12th.

Download the full audition information sheet here.

Those of us who saw the preview performance at the family picnic, know that Ann Marie & Steve are going to do a phenomenal job with this production. With that said... We'll need a lot of help with this one, everything from backstage help to corporate sponsorship. If you have some ideas, please let us know.

And last but not least... Battle of the Bands v3 gets rolling with an evaluation and kick off on Saturday, August 9th from 11:00 to noon.

At this kick-off, students will be asked to play their instrument in front of the instructors and other students (drums and amps are provided), so that they can be evaluated and grouped with their bandmates for the session.
